Vegan Barbecue Sauce

Living on a plant-based diet does not mean missing out on awesome foods and experiences like barbecuing. We love a nice summer evening with friends and family and some nice food on the barbecue. It's even more enjoyable when knowing that no animal had to suffer for your grilled delights. That said, there will be many vegan recipes coming up, that are perfect for barbecuing.😊

Mostly it's not really what we eat that makes it so enjoyable, but more the tastes and textures that make good food memorable. Which is amazing, because it means a lot of non-vegan foods can be replicated and turned into delicious plant-based alternatives.

We came up with an amazing alternative for plant-based barbecue sauce! It is sweet, yet tangy and definitely smokey. We use canned peaches and maple syrup to get the sweetness just right. Did you know you can buy liquid smoke? We didn't! It comes in tiny bottles and is basically made by collecting particles from burning wood. We use it to get that smoky taste into our BBQ sauce. To make it extra smoky we additionally use smoked paprika powder. This spice might be more available and can replace the liquid smoke if necessary.

We can't wait to share our recipe with you guys! Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Prep time: 5 minutes Cook time: 1 hour Servings: 6 Category: Sauces & Dips Cuisine: American

Ingredients

Wet Ingredients

250 g (1 1/4 cups) crushed canned tomatoes
100 g (3.5 oz.) canned peaches (without liquid)

We used canned peaches in grape juice syrup without any added sugar. But any canned peaches are fine.

160 ml (2/3 cup) peach syrup from canned peaches

This was all the liquid from a 410 g (14 oz.) can.

2 tbsp. maple syrup

Can sub for agave syrup.

1 tbsp. liquid smoke

Liquid smoke is not available in all grocery stores in Europe. We had to order it online.

2 tsp. molasses

Molasses are not easy to find in European grocery stores. You can find it in most health or bio stores or order it online.

Spices

1 tbsp. smoked paprika powder
1 tsp. sweet paprika powder
1 tsp. garlic powder
½ tsp. ginger powder
½ tsp. salt

Instructions

Step 1:

Add all ingredients into a small saucepan (any small pot is fine) and use a hand blender to blend until smooth.

Alternatively you can use any other blender to mix all ingredients before putting the smooth mixture into a saucepan.

Step 2:

Put mixture on low heat and let simmer for about 45 minutes to an hour until the sauce reached the desired consistency (ketchup-like).
